12 Female Athletes We’re Thankful For

We wanted to express our most heartfelt gratitude to the gene pool for producing these lovely ladies. While you’re watching burly men today, remember that female athletes just get hotter and hotter every year. These are 12 female athletes we’re definitely thankful for today.

Serena Williams
serena williams

We need more chicks this hot in the Grand Slams. And we need them winning like Serena Williams. Her past accomplishments in tennis is so impressive that we can’t even begin with where to list them.

Rachel Unitt
Rachel Unitt

Rachel Unitt has us reconsidering our position on whether or not soccer is a real sport (it’s not). She started her career at the young age of 14 playing for the Wolves Women. She’s now a part of the English women’s national team.

Arantxa Rus
Arantxa Rus

Ah, Holland. Producing hot chicks since nearly the beginning of time. One of their latest exports is Arantxa Rus. We’re wishing her a long career of Grand Slam entries so we can see that skirt keep flying up.

Carling Coffing
Carling Coffing

Remember when women’s golf was all kinds of beastly looking women? What happened? Now we have hot chicks like Carling Coffing parading around the links in little skirts. This is Total Pro Sports approved.

Sara Galimberti
Sara Galimberti

When you’re a track star and a beauty queen, it’s kind of cheating. Whatever. All we can say is thank you to Italy for exporting this beauty to the rest of the world. We would have kept her for ourselves.

Allyson Felix
allyson felix

Allyson Felix makes us patriotic. Because not only is she a top-quality track and field runner, she’s also a stone cold fox. And, y’know, that’s what we want America to be known for.

Anouk Hoogendijk

Anouk Hoogendijk is yet another reason to watch soccer. She plays for Bristol Academy Women out of England. This might be reason enough to brave the rain and bad food. Or you can just watch them on TV. Whatever.

Michelle Waterson

Kind of hard to believe, but they now let chicks vote, wear pants and compete in MMA. It’s kind of hot and Michelle Waterson is one reason why. Please don’t call her “The Karate Hottie,” though. She seriously needs a better nickname.

Candace Parker

If you’ve never watched the WNBA, Candace Parker might be the reason to start. The yellow-and-blue jerseys synonymous with Los Angeles have never looked quite so good.

Michelle Wie
michelle wie

Michelle Wie was the youngest person to ever qualify for an amateur USGA tournament when she was only ten years old. Now at the age of 22 she’s tearing up the LPGA. Keep getting hot chicks, LPGA and we’ll keep watching.

Alicia Sacramone
alicia sacramone

Alicia Sacramone is 5’1”, which makes her a giantess by gymnastics standards. Whatever. We’re loving it. Anything that can break up the boring parts of the Olympics with some certified hotness is all right by us.

Lindsey Vonn
lidsey vonn in a bikini

Lindsey Vonn is in the elite of female skiers. She’s won world cups in all the major events of downhill skiing. Not bad for a chick who hasn’t even hit 30 years old yet.

With a 1-3 record in three starts this season to go along with his 3.28 goals against average and .893 save percentage, some Phoenix Coyotes fans might tell you that Jason LaBarbera couldn’t even stop a balloon.  It appears as though the Coyotes’ back-up netminder has proven them right after failing to get his stick on this balloon, which made it’s way onto the ice during a recent game against the Washington Capitals.

Ndamukong Suh Gives Thanks By Stomping On A Packer (Video)

suh stompDifferent people often decide to give thanks in different ways.  Some may give thanks by praising their respective gods.  Others will give thanks by eating as much turkey as humanly possible.  And then there is Lions’ defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who decided to give thanks today by shoving the face of Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith into the ground before stomping on his stomach.

We  don’t expect the rest of the Lions players to be sending any “thank you’s” Suh’s way, as the personal foul penalty gave Green Bay a first down on Detroit’s two-yard line, rather than a fourth-and-goal from their four-yard line.  Suh was also ejected from the game for his actions.

The Packers would eventually punch it into the end zone on a John Kuhn run, giving them the 14-0 lead.  They wouldn’t look back from there, en route to the 27-15 Turkey Day victory.

Here is a look at Suh’s game-changing stomp.

Stat Line Of The Night — 11/24/11 — Terrell Suggs

terrell suggsIt isn’t often that a defensive player wins the “Stat Line of the Night” award.  Then again, it isn’t often that a defense puts up the type of performance that we witnessed from the Baltimore Ravens last night.

In a battle between two of the NFL’s most feared defenses, the Ravens came out ahead of the San Francisco 49ers, as they allowed only two field-goals against while intercepting one Alex Smith pass and recording nine sacks.  Leading the way for the Ravens was none other than outside linebacker Terrell Suggs.

With Ray Lewis out of the line-up Suggs needed to step up and lead the Ravens defense.  He did so in a big way, recording three tackles and three sacks, while forcing one fumble.  The Ravens offense struggled throughout the first three quarters, but Suggs and the defense kept them in the game.  That allowed Baltimore to come away with the 16-6 win, and Suggs comes away with “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, November 24, 2011.

Jason Witten Tackles A Cheerleader (Video)

jason witten tackles cheerleaderDallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is probably most thankful for his family, friends, health, and being able to play the sport that he loves most each weekend.  He must also be awfully thankful for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders who cheer him on every Sunday.

Witten took the opportunity to show his thanks during the first play of the fourth quarter yesterday afternoon, as he hauled in a Tony Romo pass and picked up the first down before running out of bounds and tackling one of the lovely Cowboy cheerleaders.

Yes, tackling a cheerleader may seem like a strange way to give thanks, but it sure beats stomping on someone’s stomach.

This Day In Sports History (November 25th) – Alonzo Mourning

It was on this day in 2003 that New Jersey Nets center Alonzo Mourning announced his retirement.  Mourning retired due to complications from his kidney disease.

Just a few weeks after announcing his retirement, Mourning underwent a successful kidney transplant.  After months of rehab and getting back into shape, Alonzo began practicing with his former team, the New Jersey Nets, and would start the 2004-05 on the team’s roster, albeit in a limited role.  In December of that year, unhappy with his role, Mourning was traded to the Toronto Raptors but failed to report to the team, which ultimately led to his contract being bought out.  He signed a contract with the Miami Heat, a team he was familiar with, having spent eight seasons there earlier in is career.

In 2006, Mourning achieved the ultimate goal, winning an NBA Championship.  Although he was a backup to Shaquille O’Neal , Zo played an integral role in helping the Miami Heat capture the franchise’s first NBA Championship.

Here is a tribute to Alonzo Mourning.

The Game: Arkansas vs. LSU

The Pick: LSU – 12

The Reason: LSU has been by far the best team in the nation, and they will look to hold onto that title when they play Arkansas today.  The Tigers are 11-0 overall and 8-3 ATS this season.  They will be playing a tough offense in Arkansas, but their defense has seen plenty of tough offenses thus far this season and they have been up to the challenge each and every time.  As for Arkansas, the only time they played a defense as good as LSU’s was in week four, when they lost to Alabama by a score of 38-14.  Look for a similar scenario to unfold today as LSU gets the win, and the cover.

The Game: Pittsburgh @ West Virginia

The Pick: West Virginia -6.5

The Reason: West Virginia entered the 2011 NCAA season with high expectations, and while they have been unable to live up to those expectations, they have still put up a solid 7-3 record.  They have won the last two meetings against Pittsburgh, and have covered the spread in both games.  Look for home field advantage to be the difference, as West Virginia comes away with the win on Black Friday.

2011 Record: (212-210-9), This Week: (2-5-1), Last Week: (3-5)

10 Iconic Pro Sports Families

$

As we get together with our families this holiday, we think a bit about some of the powerful families of sports. It’s kind of weird to imagine that, yes, the junior members of these families grew up in a place where dad was at the top of his game, bringing home bank. Nature? Nurture? Who knows and who cares? All we know is the world of professional sports wouldn’t be the same without these ten incredible sporting families, often times spanning generations.

The Gracies

The Gracies basically invented the sport of mixed martial arts. There are almost too many of them to count at this point. We’re pretty sure they’re the only family on this list who have a magazine named after them. While MMA has come a long way since the days when people were wearing gis in the ring, we’re thankful that the Gracies created a sport through their desire to promote their jiujitsu school.

The McMahons

The first family of professional wrestling has quite a reach these days. It not only includes most of the powerful players at the biggest professional wrestling organization in the world. It also includes HHH. We can see this family continuing to wield influence over the (sort of) sport for generations to come. Watch Linda’s career in politics as it unfolds.

The Mayweathers

It’s not just the Floyds. The Mayweather family also includes Roger, brother to both Floyd Sr. and former IBO featherweight champion “Jazzy” Jeff. Roger is currently Floyd Jr.’s trainer, which is probably more to brag about than his boxing career. Unlike Floyd Sr., at least Roger won some titles in his day — the WBA super featherweight and the WBC light welterweight.

The Ripkens

The Cals are practically synonymous with the Baltimore Orioles franchise. Both hearken back to a day when ball players played on the same team for most, if not all, of their careers. Cal Sr. has the longest minor league career of any Orioles minor league manager. While Cal Jr.’s brother Billy didn’t have the most illustrious career on the field, he’s done quite well as an announcer for Major League Baseball on XM Sirius radio.

The Mannings

Patriarch Archie Manning was known for being an amazing quarterback heading up a terrible team. For a guy with his win-loss record, he boasted a highly impressive number of Pro Bowl appearances. His sons Peyton and Eli have done much better for themselves. Not only do they each have a Super Bowl ring, they also both have the distinction of being Super Bowl MVPs.

The Pettys

The Petty stock car racing dynasty didn’t start with Richard. His father Lee blazed trails when the sport was first finding its legs. The Petty family now looms large over the entire sport of all left hand turns, arguably an even bigger presence in the sport than the Earnhardt family. We won’t get in the middle about which is bigger, but we will say that Richard has one of the best ‘stache and hat combos in the entire world.

The Griffeys

Ken Griffey Sr.’s career spanned nearly 20 years, primarily for the Cincinnati Reds, but also at the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and the Seattle Mariners, where the elder Griffey ended his career. He played in three All-Star Games (and was the 1980 MVP) and won two World Series. Son Craig Griffey didn’t get too far at the game, but Ken Griffey, Jr. is widely credited with restoring the MLB’s image after the strike of 1994.

The Earnhardts

There’s another name in the world of NASCAR — Earnhardt. The death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. looms large over the sport even to this day. It was as if the world saw Michael Jordan cut down on a basketball court by a sniper’s rifle. His son Dale Earnhardt Jr. carries on the family name as well as the tradition of winning races where the ability to make a left hand turn at high speed is what it’s all about.

The Matthews

What can be said about the Matthews, one of the most enduring legacies in the history of the NFL, not to mention professional sport. Clay Matthews Sr. was on the 49’ers in the 50s and gave birth day a dynasty. His son clay was a Pro Bowler and his son Bruce is in the Hall of Fame. Several of his grandchildren currently play in the NFL, and Clay Sr. is still alive to see them tear it up on the football field.

The Barrys

Founded by Rick Barry, this basketball dynasty has left their mark on the world of professional sport. Son Brent and Rick are the second father-son duo to win an NBA championship as players. Both Brent and brother Jon are currently television announcers for the NBA. Not a bad way to age gracefully as a former NBA pro, right?

NCAA Football Weekly Locks: Week 13

auburn cheerleaders

Week 12 provided us with exactly what we were looking for; a winning weekend.  While the Clemson Tigers’ continued struggles cost us one game, we were able to make up for it thanks to victories from Kansas Sate and Houston.  That leaves us at 19-14 heading into rivalry weekend.  There are several intriguing match-ups scheduled for what should be an exciting Saturday of college football.

Here is a look at three of those match-ups we like against the spread.

Game: #2 Alabama @ #24 Auburn
Pick: Auburn +21
Reason: It is tough to go against Alabama in this game, but with a 21-point spread in an Iron Bowl, you almost have to go with the underdog.  These two rivals have a knack for playing close games against one another, no matter where they find themselves ranked.  Only once in their last nine meetings has the margin of victory been more than 10 points.  It is hard to believe that the Tigers will come out on top in this game, but with home-field advantage on their side they should be able to keep it within three touchdowns.

Game: #22 Notre Dame @ #6 Stanford
Pick: Stanford -6.5
Reason: The Stanford Cardinals have been near-perfect this season, winning ten of their 11 games and covering the spread in nine of them.  Ad for the Fighting Irish, they have a respectable 8-3 record, but are a terrible 4-6-1 against the spread.  The Cards have failed to cover the spread in each of their last two games, but welcoming rival Notre Dame to Stanford Stadium should provide Andrew Luck and company with a much needed spark.  Look for them to win the game by at least a touchdown.

Game: #17 Clemson @ #12 South Carolina
Pick: South Carolina -3.5
Reason: For much of the season we have been riding the Clemson Tigers, and while that move did pay off in a big way at the beginning of the season, it has failed us miserable as of late.  After going undefeated through the first three games of the season, the Tigers have lost two of their last three and have failed to cover the spread in each of their last three games.  The Tigers have struggled against the run at times this season and they will be up against a Gamecocks team that has averaged nearly 200 yards per game on the ground.  Look for the Gamecock’s pass defense to keep Tajh Boyd in check and their running game should do enough on offense to earn them the win and the cover.

Last Week’s Record: (2-1), 2011 Record: (19-14)

Tempers Flare Following Artem Anisimov’s Goal Celebration (Video)

artem anisimov goal celebrationNew York Rangers forward Artem Anisimov was guilty of letting his emotions get the better of him following a short-handed goal last night, and the Tampa Bay players were guilty of much of the same following Anisimov’s ensuing celebration.

After handing the Rangers a 2-1 lead in the second period, Anisimov turned towards Lightning goaltender Mathieu Garon and fired off a few fake gun shots with his stick.  That seemed to irk the Lightning players, who went after Anisimov immediately.  Among those looking to get at him was Lightning forward Steve Downie, who illegally left the bench in order to join the melee.  The referees didn’t see it, but the cameras did, and the result could be a suspension for Downie.

When it was all said and done, 38 minutes in penalties were handed out to the players involved, including 10-minute misconducts to Downie and Anisimov.

Here is another look at the incident.

This Day In Sports History (December 9th) – Eddie George

It was on this day in 1995 that Ohio State University running back Eddie George was named as the Heisman Trophy winner.  George beat out future NFL stars Peyton Manning, Keyshawn Johnson and Warrick Dunn to take home the award.

In his first couple of seasons at Ohio State, George battled fumbling issues, which led to less playing time in a backup role.  However, he was named the starter in his junior year and had a very productive season, but it was not until his senior season that George reached his full potential.  Eddie had a monster final season at Ohio State, rushing for a school record 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns.  He was drafted in the first round (14th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers and went on to win the Rookie of the Year.

Eddie George was the prototypical workhorse running back, as he carried the ball at least 330 times in five of his eight seasons with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans organization.  Many people believe that George’s heavy workload was what led to his injuries and decline in production over his last few seasons.

Here is one of George’s most impressive college touchdowns.

9 Athletes You Never Thought You Would See In Another Uniform

athletes you never thought you would see in another uniform

Yesterday it was announced that Albert Pujols agreed to a $254 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, finally putting an end to months of speculation about the future of baseball’s greatest slugger. And while I’m glad that the sports world can now finally move on, I must admit that it will be a little strange seeing Albert Pujols wear anything other than a Cardinals uniform from here on out. Some guys become so intertwined with the team and city they play for that it’s just hard to imagine them playing anywhere else. Pujols was one of those guys.

Nevertheless, this is hardly the first time a franchise’s most iconic player has packed his bags (willingly or unwillingly) and headed to a new town. So today, for your reading pleasure, I’ve put together a list of 9 athletes you never thought you’d see wearing another uniform…but did. And no, LeBron is not #1, because I don’t think anybody ever expected he would spend his whole career in Cleveland…except people in Cleveland.

9. Mike Mussina
mike mussina

Our younger readers may find this hard to believe, but in the mid-1990s the Baltimore Orioles were good, vying with the Yankees for supremacy in the AL East. Their best pitcher and most popular player was Mike Mussina, a clutch starter and perennial All-Star. But in 2001, Moose figured, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” So he signed a deal with the hated Yankees. As far as O’s fans were concerned, he may as well have burned an American flag and strangled a litter of puppies with his bare hands on live television.

8. Wade Boggs
wade boggs

Wade Boggs won 5 batting and had 7 consecutive seasons with 200 hits. Consequently, he was the face of the Red Sox franchise during the 80s, and everyone figured he would play his whole career in Boston. Then the Red Sox let him walk away after a down 1992 season and the Yankees signed him to a three year deal—probably just because they knew seeing Boggs in pinstripes would drive Boston fans mad.

7. Bobby Hull
bobby hull jets

Bobby Hull was not only the Chicago Blackhawks’ best player for 15 years; he was also one of the NHL’s biggest superstars in the 1960s, racking up goals at a pace no one had seen before. To Hawks fans, the thought of the Golden Jet leaving Chicago was unthinkable. It was also unlikely, since NHL players (and all pro athletes) didn’t have the ability to move around in the early 70s that they do now. However, Hull was tired of being paid so little while owners got rich off his talents. So when the Winnipeg Jets of the upstart World Hockey Association offered him a ridiculous (at the time) $1,000,000 contract he jumped on it.

6. Ray Bourque
ray bourque stanley cup avalanche

Ray Bourque played 21 seasons for Boston and was the most beloved hockey player in Boston since Bobby Oar. And yet when their captain requested a trade during the 1999-2000 season, no one was angry. Quite the contrary, team management and pretty much everyone in Boston wanted him to leave so he could have a chance of finally winning a Stanley Cup. So while it was surreal to see a man synonymous with the Bruins wearing an Avalanche jersey, Boston fans were elated when Bourque finally hoisted the Cup in 2001?

In the history of pro sports, has there ever been another case of a franchise icon leaving a team with so little resentment?

5. Albert Pujols
albert pujols turns his back on st louis

“Do I want to be in St. Louis forever? Of course. People from other teams want to play in St. Louis, and they’re jealous that we’re in St. Louis because the fans are unbelievable. So why would you want to leave a place like St. Louis to go somewhere else and make $3 million or $4 more million a year? It’s not about the money. I already got my money. It’s about winning, and that’s it.”

That’s what Pujols said in a 2009 interview. Obviously, things change.

There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of rage coming out of St. Louis as a result of Albert Pujols’ departure. Instead, it seems that most people are just mourning a lost opportunity. It isn’t often that an athlete has a chance to be a legend in his sport as well as a beloved icon for a team and a city. There could have been a statue of Pujols out in front Busch stadium right next to the one of Stan Musial, but not anymore. And baseball fans just doing like being reminded so bluntly that their “pastime” is a business.

4. Brett Favre
brett favre

Perhaps no other team in sports is more closely linked to its home town than the Green Bay Packers. Hell, the team is actually owned by the people of Green Bay. So the connection between the city and its quarterback, Brett Favre, was pretty special. That’s was made it so bizarre to see Favre wear a Jets jersey and then—good Lord—a Vikings jersey. It just wasn’t right.

3. Joe Montana
joe montana chiefs

Joe Montana is regarded by some as the greatest quarterback the NFL has ever seen. Along with Jerry Rice, he was synonymous with the San Francisco 49ers. But like the Packers with Aaron Rodgers, the 49ers realized in the early 90s that their next superstar quarterback—Steve Young—wasn’t going to wait around for an aging legend to realize his time was up. This resulted in the bizarre sight of Joe Montana in a Chiefs jersey.

2. Johnny Unitas
johnny unitas chargers

Johnny Unitas wasn’t just the image of the Baltimore Colts. He was the embodiment of the idea of a what a quarterback should be. He played for the Colts from 1956 to 1972, winning 2 NFL championships, 1 Super Bowl, a bunch of MVPs, and made 10 Pro Bowl teams. But after the 1972 season, Johnny Freaking Unitas left the Colts and joined the San Diego Chargers for one lousy season. It was just unthinkable.

1. Michael Jordan
michael jordan wizards

Michael Jordan made the Bulls. He won 6 championships with daaaah Bulls. Between 1987 and 1998, about 50% of the world’s males between the ages of 7 and 27 had a poster of Michael Jordan—in a Bulls jersey—on their bedroom wall. When Jordan retired for a second time in 1998 after another NBA Championship threepeat, it seemed like the prefect ending to a storied career. He would be a Bull forever.

Then Jordan became part owner of the Washington Wizards and decided, what the hell, why not just suit up and play a bit. It was great for basketball fans in Washington, but for everyone else it was just too weird to see Jordan in that turquoise jersey.

James Harrison Will Probably Be Fined For This Hit On Colt McCoy (Video)

james harrison hit to head of colt mccoyThe wallet of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison could be shedding some pounds following last night’s 14-3 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

With the Browns driving down the field in the fourth quarter in search of the go-ahead touchdown, quarterback Colt McCoy was looking to escape the pressure by scrambling out of the pocket, but one man who he couldn’t get away from was Harrison, who proceeded to drive the crown of his helmet into the chin of McCoy.

The hit left McCoy on the ground in pain.  He had to be taken out of the game, but much to the surprise of everyone who witnessed the hit, McCoy was able to return to the game just in time to throw a game-clinching interception in the end zone.

During a post-game interview Harrison claimed that he felt the hit was legal, stating the following:

“From what I understand, once the quarterback leaves the pocket, he’s considered a runner.  All the defenseless[ness] and liberties that a quarterback has in the pocket are gone and you can tackle him just as he’s a running back. The hit wasn’t late, so I really don’t understand why it was called.”

Don’t worry James.  If you still don’t understand why your hit was penalized, I’m sure commissioner Roger Goodell will be explaining it to you in the very near future.

Here is a look at the hit that will likely cause James Harrison’s bank account to take a hit of its own.

Top 10 Best MLS Goals of 2011 (Videos)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=068FEa5VqF4

Whilst Major League Soccer – the United States’ elite football league – doesn’t exactly sport the same quantity as other leagues, such as La Liga and the Premier League, the quality of goals are arguably some of the best football fans will ever witness. Total Pro Sports has compiled a list consisting of the top 10 best MLS goals of 2011.

10. Alan Gordon vs LS – Week 13:

It’s not often that a ball is hit as perfectly as this. With the ball dipping perfectly following a header from Alan Gordon’s teammate, the lower segment of the football was hit with just enough power and direction that it found itself flying goal-ward, hitting the bar fiercely enough to cause it to go off the bar and into the back of the net.

9. Chad Barrett vs Portland – Week 6:

Retrieving the ball with his first touch via a neat flick, LA Galaxy’s Chad Barrett controls the ball with his upper arm/borderline shoulder, waits for it to drop down and unleashes an unstoppable strike. Whilst there was initially a hint of handball, it was deemed to have been controlled by his shoulder.  Either way, there’s no doubting the quality of the way he set up, composed, and finished the strike for his goal.

8. Darlington Nagbe vs Kansas City:

In terms of individual prowess, Darlington Nagbe’s goal against Kansas City is up there with the very best. The player performs a touch after the ball falls down to the edge of the area, and then takes a further kick up to subsequently strike a beautiful effort that just guided the ball into the top corner of the net.

7. Javier Martina vs Portland - Week 2:

Long balls from keepers are always awkward for defenders due to the bounce of the ball. Javier Martina capitalized on exactly that by waiting for the ball to bounce ahead of him and then executing a volley-styled shot that was combined with a suitable amount of power; a shot which found its way onto the left side of the bar and consequently ending up in the goal.

6. Juan Agudelo vs DC – Week 6:

With a fairly awkward ball to deal with when it’s behind you, the pass from Juan Agudelo was still controlled and picked up by the player in what turned out to be a beautifully crafted strike that resulted in a goal. Flicking the ball up with his boot and switching immediately to his other in order to strike the ball, the rapidness and technique proved too much for the goalkeeper.

5. David Beckham vs Kansas City - Week 9:

David Beckham’s prolonged career has seen the former England captain play in several leagues; the Premier League with Manchester United, Serie A with AC Milan, La Liga with Real Madrid, as well as Major League Soccer in America. While Beckham has had his fair share of goals during his time with the LA Galaxy, his free-kick scorcher in 2011 is arguably one of his finest. From a few yards outside the edge of the area on the left side of the pitch, Beckham swirls in a shot that dumbfounded the keeper to go past him and into the middle of the net.

4. Graham Zusi vs Dallas - Week 13:

Graham Zusi sure knows how to strike a free kick. In a 40 + yard proximity to the goal line, Zus cleverly executes a delicate, yet powerful strike that has just enough uplift to go over the keeper and into back of the net. Granted, Dallas’ goalkeeper was understandably some way off the goal line and was blind-sighted by the strike, but Graham Zus’ quality in this instance shouldn’t be overlooked.

3. Bobby Convey vs New England - Week 10:

Another free-kick stunner is executed by Bobby Convey; from just outside the box on the right side of the stadium, Convey defines what a curling shot should be like. An absolute peach of a shot sees the ball curling all the way into the top left hand corner of the goal, which was also paired with a dip that fooled everyone on the pitch.

2. Carlos Ruiz vs Chicago - Week 10:

You arguably won’t see a more stunning goal in Major League Soccer for 2011 than this beauty delivered by Carlos Ruiz. Literally touching the ball down neatly away from a player, the control showed by Ruiz allowed him to drive a powerful, dipping shot that had just enough power and vision to hit the underside of the cross-bar.

1. Eric Hassli vs Seattle - Week 13:

When Eric Hassli scored this particular goal, the world of football were in awe of the sheer technique and execution of the shot itself. Hassli capitalizes on an error by the defender to control the ball in order to flick it ahead of him and ultimately produce a mesmerizing, unstoppable shot.

The Reason: Both the Maple Leafs and the Capitals are averaging over three goals for per game and they are both also averaging over three goals against per game.  The Leafs have gone over the total in five of their last seven overall and four of their last five on the road.  As for the Caps, they have gone over in seven of their last 10.  Five of the last seven games between these two teams have gone over the total.  Look for plenty of goals during what should be a high-scoring affair in Washington tonight.

The Game: Florida Panthers @ Buffalo Sabres

The Pick: Panthers +110

The Reason: The Panthers have been a pleasant surprise this season, as their 16-8-4 record has them sitting atop the Southeast Division.  They have won four of their last five overall and seven of their last 10 on the road.  The Sabres, on the other hand, have had their fair share of struggles this season.  They have won only two of their last eight overall and one of their last seven games at home.  They have struggled at the First Niagara Center (6-8-2) and we expect them be dealt another loss at home tonight.

2011 Record: (221-217-9), This Week: (4-4), Last Week: (6-4)

kickboxing knockoutDuring a kickboxing match in Trieste, Italy, Giuseppe Patane was on the receiving end of several vicious shots.  However, many of us are left wondering which shot was the hardest?  The deadly left-right-left combo from his opponent, Tadas Jonkus, which knocked him unconscious, or his ensuing spill through the ropes that resulted in him landing head-first on the floor outside the ring?

You can check out the knockout and ensuing spill at the 1:00 mark of the video below.

“When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Wasington Generals?”

Good question Dan!  That was what many of us were left wondering when it was announced yesterday that a three-team trade would send Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers.  However, it appears as though 25 of the NBA’s teams will not be changing their names to the “Washington Generals” just yet, as the league -who owns the Hornets – decided to nix the deal due to “basketball reasons,” with Commissioner David Stern stating that New Orleans is “better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade.”

For those of you wondering what the terms of that trade were, here is a recap of what each team was expected to receive:

To Lakers: Chris Paul

To Rockets: Pau Gasol

To Hornets: Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Lamar Odom, Goran Dragic and the Knicks’ 2012 first-round pick (which Houston received in a previous deal)

sexy women of action sportsWhen you begin to name some of the sexiest women in sports, Anastasia Ashley, Gretchen Bleiler, Amber Wing, Alana Blanchard, Hannah Teter, Roxy Louw and Lindsey Vonn will all likely be mentioned at some point.  These seven lovely ladies all made BNQT’s list of the sexiest women in action sports, and their reward was an appearance on this sexy three-minute mash-up, which features each of them taking part in their respective sports and showing quite a bit of skin in the process…

…On second thought, I guess the clip is more of a reward for us, the viewers, rather than the gorgeous ladies taking part in it.

Here it is.  Enjoy!

konopka vs fraserZenon Konopka has been the busiest fighter in the NHL this season.  He entered last night’s game against the New Jersey Devils with nine bouts on the season, one ahead of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Derek Dorsett, who entered last night’s action with eight bouts.  Dorsett took the opportunity to level himself with Konopka by dropping the gloves with Francois Bouillon of the Nashville Predators last night, but Konopka moved ahead of him once again, thanks to his exciting bout with Devils’ tough-guy Mark Fraser.

The bout took place midway through the third period, and it was good enough to earn honors as the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Thursday, December 8, 2011.
