This Day In Sports History (December 23rd) – Immaculate Reception

It was on this day in 1972 that the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders played in the AFC Divisional playoff game at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The game is most remembered for the “Immaculate Reception” made by Steelers running back Franco Harris.

The play occurred when the Steelers faced a fourth-and-10 from their own 40-yard line with 22 seconds remaining, no time-outs and trailing 7-6.  Quarterback Terry Bradshaw dropped back to pass and under great pressure threw up a ball intended for halfback John Fuqua.  Oakland safety Jack Tatum collided with Fuqua just as the ball arrived, which sent Fuqua to the ground as the ball rebounded back in the other direction.  Being in the right place at the right time, Pittsburgh running back Franco Harris scooped up the ball just before it hit the ground and ran it in for a touchdown to give the Steelers the 13-7 victory.

The play is regarded as one of the greatest and most controversial in all of sports history.  NFL Films agreed, naming it both the greatest and most controversial play in NFL history.

Here is the infamous “Immaculate Reception.”

The Niklas Kronwall Hit Parade Continues (Video)

niklas kronwall hitOn Wednesday night it was Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler who stepped onto the train tracks belonging to the “Niklas Kronwall express.”  On Thursday night, it was Tim Jackman’s turn to get lit up by the Detroit Red Wings defenseman.

In both instances, the Wings’ opposition were able to capitalize immediately following the check, as Kesler received a penalty for retaliating but the Canucks scored a shorthanded goal seconds later, while Jackman took the hit to make a pass that led to a Calgary Flames goal last night.

Sometimes you simply have to take a hit to make a play.  Kesler and Jackman did just that.

You can check out both hits by Kronwall in the videos below.

Don’t you hate it when you’re watching a game and a fan runs out on the field, but the announcers get all sanctimonious and talk about how they aren’t going to show it on TV because they don’t want to glorify this guy’s behavior?

I mean, yes, we all know you shouldn’t run out on the field, and the players must hate it because they never know what the person is going to do. But come on, let’s be real. Yes, sometimes these incidents can be scary, but they can also be entertaining and hilarious. So let’s not all act like we don’t enjoy it on some level.

Today, in honor of the bizarre fan field invasion that occurred during a Dutch soccer game earlier this week, Total Pro Sports brings you a list of some of the most memorable fan field invasions of all time. While some of them are scary, for the most part these incidents involved harmless drunks making fools of themselves and getting creamed by security and/or players.

What’s not to like about that?

The Game: Philadelphia Flyers @ New York Rangers

The Pick: Flyers -115

The Reason: Tonight the Rangers and Flyers square off for the final time before the two teams meet at the 2012 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic on January 2nd at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.  The Flyers have won eight of their last ten games, and six of their last seven on the road.  Claude Giroux is back in their lineup and his four-point performance on Wednesday made it clear that he hasn’t missed a beat.  Look for him and the Flyers to continue finding success as they get the win tonight.

The Game: Ottawa Senators @ Carolina Hurricanes

The Pick: Senators +100

The Reason: The Hurricanes continue to struggle, as they have won just two of their last 13 games overall, and just one of their last seven at home.  Tonight they will be up against a Senators team that has won four of their last five.  Ottawa has also won each of the two meetings between these two clubs this season.  Look for them to win their third against the Canes tonight.

2011 Record: (231-225-9), This Week: (5-3), Last Week: (4-4)

Ryan Callahan Throws A Puck In Matt Moulson’s Face (Video)

callahan throws puck at moulsonIn the spirit of Christmas we have a tale of giving and receiving for you all.  It comes courtesy of last night’s NHL game between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders.

Doing the giving was Rangers forward Ryan Callahan, who swatted at an airborne puck along the boards.  As for the receiver, that would be Islanders forward Matt Moulson, who took said swatted puck square in the face.

A puck to the face may not seem like much of a gift, but for two crosstown rivals that clearly hate each other, I’d say it’s a good start.

The video asks viewers to vote on their favorite shot at tabletennisdaily.co.uk.  At the moment when this article was published, shot No. 6 was at the top of the poll, with 20 of 88 total votes.  It features an incredible display of finesse from Ding Ning, as she lands the ball on he opponent’s side of the table, before watching the backspin take it back over the net and onto her side of the table.  It is one of the few times you will see the loser of a point earn “shot of the year” recognition.

Is it worthy?  Check it and the others out in the video below, and feel free to vote here afterwards.

martin vs bickelWhile Ryan Callahan was busy throwing pucks at the face of Matt Moulson during last night’s game between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders, Matt Martin and Stu Bickel opted to throw vicious right hands at the faces of one another.

The fight broke out immediately following a face-off early in the third period and lasted for a hard-fought 50 seconds, earning both of these combatants a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Thursday, December 22, 2011.

Top 10 Best Nani Goals (Videos)

Nani, otherwise known as Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha (hence his shorter name), had been under the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo when he was at Manchester United. After his transfer to Real Madrid, though, Nani had a chance to prove his worth and flourish. Granted, he was already doing exactly that when Ronaldo was around but just couldn’t break into the starting line-up and keep a consistent place. In recent Premier League seasons – especially the start of the current season and the 2010/2011 season – Nani has clearly showcased his talents and versatility. Total Pro Sports takes a look at the top 10 best Nani goals.

Ilya Kovalchuk Scores Own-Goal, Canes’ Goalie Cam Ward Gets Credit (Video)

kovalchuk own goalIlya Kovalchuk may be a regular on the weekly highlight packages, but the Devils’ forward seems to have a knack for getting himself onto the yearly lowlight packages as well.  Last year he did so after failing miserably during a shootout opportunity early in November.  This time around he was busy scoring on his own net, via an errant pass with the goalie pulled and his team trailing 3-2.

What makes this own-goal even more interesting is the fact that goaltender Cam Ward was the last Hurricanes player to touch the puck.  As a result, he earns credit for the goal and moves up from 574th into a tie for 448th in league scoring.

Here is a look at the goal that got him there.

This Day In Sports History (December 27th) – Barry Zito

It was on this day in 2006 that the San Francisco Giants signed free agent starting pitcher Barry Zito to a seven-year deal worth $126 million.  Zito’s contract made him the highest paid pitcher in Major League history at the time of the signing.

Barry Zito had a terrific season in 2002 when he had a 23-5 record with a 2.75 ERA in 35 starts and went on to win the American League Cy Young as a member of the Oakland Athletics.  However, his next four seasons in Oakland were up and down, as he compiled a rather mediocre 55-46 record.  The Giants felt that a change of scenery would help resurrect his career, so they signed him to be the ace of their pitching staff.  Unfortunately for San Francisco, Zito is not the pitcher he once was as he put together an ugly 40-57 record during his first four years as a Giant.

Things had gotten so bad for Zito that the Giants left him off their post-season roster last year.  The move turned out to be the right decision, as they went on to defeat the Texas Rangers to capture the World Series Championship.

Here is Zito hanging out with some lovely ladies.

Yorvit Torrealba Suspended In Venezuela For Punching Umpire In Face (Video)

yorvit torrealba punchIt appears as though Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba is still upset about losing the 2011 World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.  And he is taking his anger out on the Venezuelan umpires.

While playing for the Caracas Lions of Venezuela’s professional baseball league during the MLB offseason, Torrealba had some choice words following a strikeout.  Those words got the 33-year-old ejected, but he wouldn’t go quietly, as he got in the face of umpire Dario Rivero Jr, before delivering a stiff right to the side of his head.

Dario would be a little shaken up by the shot, but he was able to walk it off.  As for Torrealba, he received a 66-game suspension, which means he probably won’t be playing anymore baseball until the 2012 MLB season opens up in April.

Here is a look at the punch that will force Torrealba to take a break and rest up during the winter months.

The Game: Utah Jazz @ Los Angeles Lakers

The Pick: Jazz +4.5

The Reason: With the lockout forcing the NBA to condense their schedule, some teams will be forced to play as much as three games in three consecutive days.  The Lakers will be the first team forced into such a situation, as they will play their third game since Christmas Day tonight when they host the Utah Jazz.  It may be hard to believe that the Lakers will lose their first three games of the season, but it is even harder to believe that they will be able to win their third game in three night’s with Kobe Bryant nursing a wrist injury.  Look for the Jazz to cover the spread, and they could even earn the straight-up victory.

The Game: Calgary Flames @ Columbus Blue Jackets

The Pick: Flames -125

The Reason: The Blue Jackets have struggled mightily this season and they are currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak.  their latest loss came in Chicago last night.  Now they will have to travel back home to take on a Calgary Flames team that has won their last three games in a row.  Look for the Blue Jackets’ losing streak to continue as the Flames come away with the win tonight.

Watch Santa Claus Heckle LeBron James (Video)

santa claus heckles lebron jamesMany people hate LeBron James, and it appears as though Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is among them.

After dropping off gifts at the houses of millions of children around the world, Santa Claus decided to drop in on the Christmas Day game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat.  While seated just a few rows up behind the basket (Santa can get great seats to any game), Father Christmas took the opportunity to yell at LeBron James while the Miami Heat superstar was shooting free-throws.

Apparently, Santa forgot to bring LeBron the championship ring he asked for last season, but if Sunday’s performance was any indication, that ring could be replacing the coal in James’ stocking six months from now.

The 9 Weirdest Sports Stories Of 2011

Huh. After researching this piece, it would seem that 2011 wasn’t THAT weird a year for sports. Sure, there were a handful of really bizarre small stories, and a few somewhat bizarre big ones (Tebow, Paterno), but it seems as though athletes were on fairly decent behavior this year. What is the world coming to?

Fortunately, with the benefit of hindsight over the past thirty years or so, we know this is a statistical anomaly. After this stretch of decency, we can comfortably look forward to 2012 knowing that sports will be as crazy and depraved as ever. As we approach, let’s look back on the past year and determine how we can raise the bar on January 1st.

drew brees record breaking speechBy now you have probably seen the footage of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees throwing his fourth touchdown during yesterday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, and breaking Dan Marino’s single season record for most passing yards in the process.  What you may not have seen, however, is footage of Drew Brees taking a moment following the game to thanks his teammates, coaches, and the many others who have helped him accomplish such a feat.

Among those “many others” that Brees credited with helping him get to 5,087 passing yards this season was the equipment managers, who he couldn’t help but thank for the countless hours that they have spent “rubbing down those balls…full service.”

You can check out his entire post-game locker room speech in the video below.  References to ball-rubbing equipment managers begin at the 15 second mark.

Mavs’ Sean Williams Pukes On The Bench (Video)

sean williams pukeThe lockout was bound to negatively affect the conditioning of some NBA players.  Dallas Mavericks forward Sean Williams is one of those players, as he could only manage to stay on the floor for 11:06 during last night’s game against the Denver Nuggets before retreating to the bench and losing his lunch on the court at American Airlines Center.

Williams probably wasn’t the only one with an upset stomach during the Mavs’ 115-93 home loss last night, as the defending champions now find themselves 0-2 following two lopsided losses to start the 2011-12 NBA season.

Looking for a way to sum up the start of the Mavs’ title defense?  Leave that to the following footage of Williams puking.
