Patrick Kane Loves The Blonde And Other Great Sound Bytes From The NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft (Video)

patrick kane loves the blondeLast night the NHL held their second annual All-Star Game Fantasy Draft, as team captains Zdeno Chara and Daniel Alfredsson took turns selecting All-Star invitees until they had both filled up their respective rosters and there was no one left to choose from.

Perhaps the most interesting part about this All-Star format is seeing which players are considered the best among their peers and were chosen early on in the draft, and which have yet to establish a name for themselves and were therefore left to wait until the later rounds to be selected.  Another interesting aspect of the show was listening in on the mic’d up players, as they discuss everything, from the players being selected to the blonde smokeshow handing out the jerseys.

Patrick Kane took a moment to discuss the latter while sitting alongside Florida Panthers’ defenseman Brian Campbell.  You can listen to that and many other sounds bytes from last night’s festivities in the video below (Kane’s approval of the blonde comes at the 1:42 mark).

This Day In Sports History (January 27th) – Super Bowl XXV

It was on this day in 1991 that Super Bowl XXV was held at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The New York Giants upset the favorite Buffalo Bills to capture the franchise’s second Super Bowl championship.

The Buffalo Bills entered the game as seven point favorites, but it was the Giants who used their power running game to manage the clock and remain in control of the game. New York held the ball for over 40 minutes, as running back Ottis Anderson pounded the Bills defense to the tune of 102 rushing yards on 21 carries. Anderson also added one reception for seven yards and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Despite the Giants’ overwhelming ball possession, the Bills still had one last shot to win it at the end of the game.

Trailing 20-19 with 2:16 remaining, Bills quarterback Jim Kelly led his team down the field to the Giants 29-yard line, setting up kicker Scott Norwood for a 47-yard field goal with eight seconds left. However, Norwood’s kick would sail just right of the goalpost and would mark the first of four consecutive losses in the Super Bowl for the Buffalo franchise.

Here are highlights from Super Bowl XXV.

ferris bueller super bowl commercialIt appears as though Ferris Bueller will be taking one more day off on Sunday, February 5, 2012, as he gets set to make his return during Super Bowl XLVI.

The makers of this commercial didn’t give us much of a hint regarding the reason for Ferris’ (still played by Matthew Broderick) desire to take another day off, but according to the people at Japopnik, it may have something to do with the all-new Honda CR-V.  I guess Mr. Frye still hasn’t gotten around to fixing that 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California that his son, Cameron, totaled 25 years ago.

Here is a sneak peak of the commercial.

9 Reasons Why They Should Just Pull The Plug On The NHL All-Star Game

This may come to a shock to some sports fans, but the 2012 NHL All-Star Game is this weekend. No, really. And I’ll give you twenty bucks if you can tell me where the game is being held without hitting up Google. (Just kidding. I will not be giving anyone twenty bucks.)

I mean no disrespect to the NHL or hockey in general. In fact, hockey is one of my favorite sports. I watch at least a couple of games a week, and come playoff time I hardly ever leave the couch. But the NHL All-Star Game is so freakin lame, you just can’t get excited about it. If a serious fan like me had no idea the game would be on January 29 until about January 22, how earth does the NHL think they’re going to attract any casual fans?

And the thing is, the NHL doesn’t need this silly nonsense. Take it away, and I guarantee no one would miss it. So I think it’s time they put an end to the whole thing and let us all move on with our lives.

But just in case you’re not sold yet on the idea of scrapping the NHL All-Star Game, here are 9 reasons why the league needs to pull the plug.

DonnaHere are some of the best sports plays for all you gamblers out there.

The Game: Orlando Magic @ New Orleans Hornets

The Pick: Magic -4

The Reason: The Orlando Magic didn’t come through for us when we picked them last night, but we believe they will make up for it with a solid bounce-back performance tonight.  They have been quite impressive on the road this season, having won five of their last six away from home.  They will be taking on the 3-15 Hornets, who have managed to cover the spread in only three of their ten road games thus far this season.  Look for Dwight Howard and company to come out hard and avenge last night’s home loss with a big win in New Orleans tonight.

The Game: Oklahoma City Thunder @ Golden State Warriors

The Pick: Thunder -4

The Reason: The Thunder have been one of the best teams in the NBA thus far this season, as their 15-3 record is good enough for first in the Western Conference.  Tonight they take on a Golden State team that sits near the bottom of the Conference with a 6-11 record.  The Thunder have won 10 of their last 11 games, and five of their last six on the road.  As for the Warriors, they have covered the spread in just two of their last seven home games.  Look for OKC to get the job done once again, as they earn the win (by more than four) in Golden State tonight.

2012 Record: (17-17-2), This Week: (2-5-1), Last Week: (6-4)

The X-Games Pay Tribute To Sarah Burke (Video)

sarah burkeThousands of people, both athletes and fans, have made their way to Aspen for the start of the 2012 Winter X-Games.  Many of them have brought their heavy hearts along with them following the tragic death of Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke.

Burke passed away on January 19th of this year following a tragic accident while training for the X-Games on the Park City Mountain Resort Eagle superpipe in Park City, Utah.  She will always be considered a pioneer for superpipe skiing (she helped make it an Olympic event, beginning in 2014) and was beloved by all of her fellow competitors.

Many of those competitors, along with family, friends and fans of Sarah, took to the slopes last night to honor the passing of one of the most influential women to ever take part in the X-Games.  You can watch the ceremony in the video below.

Penn State Scandal And Rick James Quotes Among The Many References From Evans vs. Davis UFC on FOX Presser (Video)

phil davis press conferenceTomorrow’s UFC on Fox event may not feature any of the best fighters in the UFC (no title bouts have been scheduled on this card), but it does happen to feature some of the best trash-talkers in the sport.  One of those trash-talkers is Chael Sonnen, who will be taking on Michael Bisping in the c0-main event.  As for the others, they would be Rashad Evans and Phil Davis, who will be squaring off in the other main event of the evening.

We have seen Sonnen run his mouth on several occasions before, and while many consider him to be one of the best talkers in the business, it was the mouths of Evans and Davis that were busy stealing the show during yesterday’s press conference.

Evans’ cruelist verbal shot came when he compared the beating that he is going to lay on Davis to what Jerry Sandusky did to the kids at Penn State (1:05 of first video).  As for Davis, he seemed to do his opponent one better when he answered a question regarding Rashad’s chances of beating him in a wrestling match by reminding us all that “cocaine is a hell of a drug” (0:24 of second video).

If the fights are even half as good as the presser was, it look like we could be in for quite the entertaining free UFC event!

colten moore 120-foot fallThose involved in the 2012 Winter X-Games have already been dealing with one tragedy, and they narrowly avoided having to deal with another following last night’s snowmobile freestyle competition, as 22-year-old Colten Moore lost control of his snowmobile while in midair and suffered a nasty 120-foot fall during his second run in the first heat of the elimination round.

Thankfully, Moore was able to rotate his body while in the air, causing him to land on his back and avoid any serious injuries.  The fall still appeared to be a painful one, but Colten was able to shake it off in time to claim the gold medal in the competition, beating out Joe Parsons and his very own brother, Caleb Moore, who finished in second and third, respectively.

Here is a look at the fall than nearly prevented Moore from reaching the top of the podium.

7 year old letter to kyle williams

For many San Francisco 49ers fans, wide receiver and replacement punt returner Kyle Williams has been public enemy number one following his two muffed punts during his team’s 20-17 overtime loss to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game.  But while many fans have threatened Williams’ life and well-being following his game-changing errors, seven-year-old Owen Shure of Los Angeles showed more maturity than most 49ers fans have exhibited over the past week when he wrote the following to Williams:

Dear Mr. Williams,

We just watched the playoff game.  I feel really bad for you but I wanted to tell you that you had a great season.  You should be very proud, so I wanted to say thank you.  I am your #1 FAN!

And just when we thought all of the older Niners fans would learn a thing, or two, from Owen’s kind words, we discovered the following letter from a 37-year-old 49ers fan.

37-year-old letter to kyle williams

It’s not exactly heart-warming, but I guess it is better than the death threats and other hate mail that has likely accumulated in his mailbox over the past five days.

kevin garnett bar fight interviewAs we head into the weekend, we leave you with these final words from an emotional Kevin Garnett following the Boston Celtics impressive 27-point comeback against the Orlando Magic last night.

So what did we learn from KG’s 10 second rant to open up his post-game interview with Craig Sager?  Simple.  He has been in a bar fight before.  Charles Barkley has been in a bar fight before.  And Craig Sager hasn’t been in a bar fight before.

Enjoy the weekend!  And try not to get into any bar fights!

This Day In Sports History (January 30th) — Super Bowl XXXIV

super bowl xxxivIt was on this day in 2000 that the St. Louis Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV.  It was the franchise’s first, and only, Super Bowl victory.

The 1999 season was quite the roller coaster ride for the St. Louis Rams, as they would lose their starting quarterback, Trent Green, to a season-ending leg injury during the pre-season.  That allowed little-known Kurt Warner to step in, and he did so admirably, leading the Rams’ offense to an incredible 526-point season.  This marked the beginning of what many would refer to as “The Greatest Show on Turf.”

The Rams would finish with a 13-3 record and cruised into the Super Bowl with wins over the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  As for their opponents, the Titans, they would need a Music City Miracle against the Buffalo Bills, along with a few more big plays in order to reach the big game.

This Super Bowl would turn out to be an exciting one, as Rams’ linebacker Mike Jones tackled Titans’ receiver Kevin Dyson on the Rams’ one-yard line on the final play of the game to secure the 23-16 victory.  In addition to winning regular season MVP honors, Kurt Warner would also earn the Super Bowl MVP, as he recorded 414 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Here is a look at the Titans’ final drive of the game.

LeBron James Jumps Over John Lucas For The Alley-Oop Slam (Video)

lebron james dunk over john lucasMany believe that yesterday afternoon’s game between the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls was a preview of what we can expect to see during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals this post-season.  If that does turn out to be the case, I can’t wait to see LeBron James soar up and over the Bulls’ John Lucas before eventually throwing down a monstrous alley-oop slam once again.

James would go on to have a big game, as he recorded 35 point during the Heat’s 97-93 victory.  Of those 35 points, none were more impressive than the following two.

The Game: Dallas Mavericks @ Phoenix Suns

The Pick: Mavericks -2.5

The Reason: The Dallas Mavericks have won five of their last six games overall, and four of their last six on the road.  As for the Phoenix Suns, they are 3-8 straight up in their last 11 games, and they are also 3-8 against the spread in their last 11.  The Mavs have have not only won each of the last seven meetings between these two teams, but they have also covered the spread in each of those games.  The Suns could be without Steve Nash tonight as he recovers from a thigh bruise, but whether he plays or not, we believe it will be the Mavericks coming away with the victory in this game.

The Game: Detroit Pistons @ Milwaukee Bucks

The Pick: Bucks -7

The Reason: Despite an 8-11 record this season, the Bucks have been a tough team to beat at home, winning five of their first seven games at the Bradley Center.  Tonight they take on a Pistons team that has won just one of their last nine overall, and just one of their last ten on the road.  They have also managed to cover the spread just twice in ten road games this season.  Detroit has been dealing with a barrage of injuries, and they should only make things more difficult for them.  With that being said, look for the Bucks to come away with the convincing win tonight.

15 Classic Championship Rematches

We’re now only a week away from Super Bowl XLVI—or as I like to think of it, only a week away from either Boston or New York losing a championship. And while I always enjoy watching fans in Boston or New York suffer the agony of defeat, this year there’s an even bigger storyline that you’ll be hearing about until next Monday: the rematch.

Yes, as we all know—and as we all will be reminded 500 times this week, then another 200-300 times during the game next Sunday—this year’s Super Bowl is a rematch of Super Bowl XLII back in 2008. So to celebrate Brady vs. Manning Part II, I thought it might be nice to do a list of classic championship rematches.

Here are 15 of them. Are they the 15 “greatest” championship rematches? Yes, absolutely. No question about it. So you should probably check it out.

Liverpool Fan Arrested For Racist Gesture (Video)

racist liverpool fanIf you thought the English Football Association’s battle to eliminate racism from the game of soccer was a joke, think again.

Just over one month ago Liverpool’s Luis Suarez was dealt an eight-game suspension for racist comments made towards Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.  Apparently, the Liverpool fans learned nothing from that incident, as the storied Premier League club now finds itself in the midst of yet another racial controversy, as a supporter of the team was caught on television performing an imitation of a monkey towards one of Man U’s black players during their FA Cup match-up at Anfield yesterday.

Footage of the incident soon went viral, causing many to file complaints with the police.  The suspect, a 58-year-old man from North Wales, was eventually arrested and questioned by the Merseyside Police before being released on bail.

I guess he got to feel what it’s like to be a real monkey after being caged inside his jail cell for a few hours.  Here is a look at the act that got him there (white jacket on the left side of the screen).

goalie fight during hockey brawlWhile the NHLers were busy taking it easy on one another during the 2012 All-Star Game over the weekend, the Bakersfield Condors and the Ontario Reign of the ECHL decided to step in and provide us with our fix of on-ice brutality, via this brawl which took place during their game Saturday night.

It all started with a bone-crushing hit behind the Condors net and ended with a spirited scrap between the goalies of the two teams.  As for all of the action that takes place between these two events, including several fights and a 2-on-1 beatdown, they were awfully entertaining as well.

Brandon Marshall Used His Knee To Make This Amazing Catch At The Pro Bowl (Video)

brandon marshall pro bowl tdBrandon Marshall made six catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns during his record-breaking Pro Bowl MVP performance yesterday night.  One of those receptions, 47 of those yards and one of those touchdowns came during this miraculous grab on a third-quarter Hail Mary pass from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.

With the AFC trailing 35-31 late in the third quarter, Marshall was able to regain the lead for his team, as he got loose in the secondary and made an unbelievable catch off his knee while going to the ground in the end zone.  That touchdown would put the AFC up by a score of 38-35, and they wouldn’t look back from there, en route to the 59-41 victory.

Here is a look at the game-changing catch that was made by yesterday’s game-changing player.  Check it out.

Carlos Boozer’s Son Cheers For The Heat, Against Daddy (Video)

boozer son cheers for heatCarlos Boozer and his wife, CeCe, have three kids.  Surprisingly, not all of them are Chicago Bulls fans.

You’d think the child of every pro athlete would root for their father’s (or mother’s) team, but that isn’t the case in the Boozer household, as Carlos’ son was spotted chanting “Let’s go Heat” during daddy’s latest visit to South Beach.

Sure, LeBron James’ monster alley-oop over John Lucas may have been enough to excite even the biggest Heat hater, but cheering against your own father?  The man that gave you life and has supported you throughout it?  I think this kid needs to get his priorities straight.

Bobcats’ DeSagana Diop Gives Us The Worst Free-Throw Attempt Ever (Video)

desagana diop free throwIn 2001, DeSagana Diop was drafted by the Cleveland Cavalers with the 8th overall pick of the NBA Entry Draft.  Standing 7-feet tall and weighing 280-pounds, it comes as little surprise to hear that the center out of Oak Hill Academy was drafted for his size, and not his precision shooting from the free-throw line.

If that notion hasn’t already been reinforced via Diop’s 47.3% conversion rate from the charity stripe throughout his ten year career, it should have become quite evident following this embarrassment from Saturday night’s game between the Bobcats and the Wizards.

Worst free-throw ever?  It has my vote.
